Madam, - I believe there is a very simple solution to the debate on motorway tolls. Why don't we adapt the Swiss system, where any motorist who use the motorways must purchase an annual "motorway sticker" at an additional cost on top of the normal car tax.
A different colour is used each calendar year. The sticker cannot be removed from the windscreen in one piece so it cannot be moved from one vehicle to another.
Visitors to Switzerland must also purchase such a sticker, should they wish to use the motorway network. The police carry out random checks at motorway exits and motorists face heavy fines if they do not have a current sticker.
Such a system eliminates the traffic hold-ups associated with tolls, saving time and fuel. I think a sticker cost of €100 to €150 per annum, would be good value. A tourist could purchase a 30-day sticker for €20. - Yours, etc,
