Madam, - David Sowby writes (September 16th) that nuclear power is the sole source of energy that is economical, secure, safe and does not emit greenhouse gases.
Enormous quantities of greenhouse gases are emitted in the mining of the ores, the extraction of uranium and its active isotope. Transport of the radioactive material and the building plus the eventual decommissioning of nuclear power stations emit much more. The greenhouse gas emission in the 100,000 years of storage and monitoring is incalculable.
The idea that it is economical, secure and safe is derisory. - Yours, etc,
