Discrimination and fee-paying schools

A chara, – Geoff Scargill's contention (October 14th) that Mary Mitchell-O’Connor (Opinion, October 11th) makes a "coherent argument on the reason why parents should not be penalised for sending their children to fee-paying schools" beggars belief.

State subvention of fee-paying schools is to be welcomed where that subvention allows schools catering to a particular, non-mainstream, ethos to compete on an equal footing with mainstream education but when the subvention allows fee-paying schools to provide their pupils with the advantage over mainstream schools of enhanced class sizes, I believe that the justification for the subvention diminishes, even though that belief will allow Mr Scargill to label me as a “begrudger”. – Is mise,
