Sir, – What about a car chasing a dog (An Irishman’s Diary, March 29th)? In our case back in the 1970s, it was our dog Pip.
He enjoyed a wander, did Pip. He strolled from Beaumont to the Swords Road and hopped on whatever bus took his fancy. I remember at least two phone calls. One call from a chemist in Swords to say that he was having afternoon tea and biccies there. Another call came from security at the airport. He was having lunch in the security check booth!
My father made many a journey to bring him home but he never seemed to mind.
The day Pip died was the first time I ever saw my father cry. Truly a man’s best friend. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – It was easy for dogs to chase cars in the 1980s. Most motorists spent more time pushing than driving. – Yours, etc,
