Sir, - When I left these shores some 15 years ago looking for work abroad, there was much discussion in the newspapers regarding the strange phenomenon of Dublin buses and the drivers' refusal to open the centre doors.
Indeed it was one of the first things that I noticed when arriving in England, waiting in vain to disembark from the front doors of a bus in south London only to be greeted by a baffled driver looking at me as if I was mad! "What's the problem mate, use the middle doors like everybody else."
Needless to say I learnt my lesson that day and over the years travelling around Europe one soon gets accustomed to getting on the bus at the front, and getting off at the back. Curious to note then that on my return to Dublin the arguments regarding Dublin bus centre doors not opening are still abound. - Yours, etc.,
Arthur Fortune, Shankill, Co Dublin.
