Madam, - The signatories of the letter of March 13th are not the only concerned scholars to have had their views on the future of the study of Old Irish ignored by the president of UCD. I wrote to him several months ago in my capacity as former holder of the chair of Old Irish at UCC, since advertised and filled by a clearly much more enlightened administration. My letter remains unacknowledged. - Yours, etc,
PÁDRAIG Ó RIAIN, Kilcully, Whites Cross, Cork.
Madam, - As a history graduate of UCD and current member of the NUI Convocation Council, I would like to add my voice to those who have recently in your Letters page deplored the discontinuance of early and medieval Irish as a full degree subject in that university.
Given the changes to the drama course in Trinity and women's studies in Galway is it not time we had a national debate on the role our universities play in both Irish economic and social life. - Yours, etc,
BERNADINE O'SULLIVAN, Fortfield Road, Terenure, Dublin 6w.
