Madam, – I am very glad to see that some action is being proposed in the Dáil to formalise the dress code of the members, A proper dress code (suit, shirt and tie and no lapel badges) that shows respect for our national parliament, for the taxpayer who pays them significant salaries and for those who elected them, should be a minimum requirement for all TDs.

I am not aware of ever having seen on television, any other parliamentary gathering whose members did not conform to a high standard of dress code. Here I must compliment the ladies in the Dáil who always seem to put their best foot forward and in particular Mary Hanafin (now absent) who was always a model of decorum.

There is a dress code for most professions and occupations, and occasions such as weddings and funerals. Even Mother Teresa had a uniform.

Now that those concerned have got their first pay cheque perhaps they could be encouraged to invest in a suit, shirt and tie and show the respect that our national parliament and the electorate deserve. – Yours, etc,
