Drinking water quality

Sir, – Recent water disinfection failures again confirm that producers of drinking water for public consumption must be required by law to publish online in near real-time the residual free chlorine content of the drinking water as distributed from their water treatment plants.

A residual free chlorine content of between 0.1mg/l & 0.3 mg/l at network extremities generally indicates that the water has been adequately disinfected. Note that if cryptospiridium is present in the raw water, additional treatment such as UV irridation will be required.

Sir, – Regarding the recent failure of both Irish Water and their sometimes sidekicks, the county councils: Could I suggest that a wide ranging group of senior members from both parties be sent on an all expenses paid trip to some third world country to find out how it’s done over there. – Yours, etc,
