Sir, – The number of deaths due to drowning after being swept from rocks while fishing appears to have increased around our coast in recent years.
Wearing a self-inflating life jacket may well increase survival from such an accident, without curtailing enjoyment of the sport.
I appreciate they are not suitable for those under 16-years and non-swimmers, who may still consider wearing a traditional life jacket. I know many would feel it is not “cool” to wear safety devices, but it is better to be alive. Users of small craft soon got over that idea, following legislation.
I suggest the Marine Casualty Investigation Board consider the feasibility of introducing such a recommendation, if they have not already done so.
– Yours, etc,
EDWARD DOYLE
