Dublin – a city in need of a vision?

Sir, – We have a city with a unique culture and heritage, a major bay with mountains close by and a potentially attractive and compact city centre. It is not hard to envision using these assets to transform what is a nice city into a spectacular one.

However, I believe that we are just not too good at integrated visionary planning and the evidence is all over the place. O’Connell Street is an embarrassment, the bay and the mountains are virtually ignored as amenities connected to the city, and we have ad hoc transport planning and delays in developing key infrastructure.

I think the problem is that there is no single vision for the entire city and that too many organisations are focused on individual parts of the system, leaving no one focused on the city as a whole. Why not develop a strategic masterplan for the city? This would require political leadership at the highest level and organisational changes to ensure that it could be implemented. – Yours, etc,
