Madam, - Like Niall McCullough and Mairead Ludden (December 16th), I would also like to support the retention of the Gateway monument in Dun Laoghaire.

With the pedestrianisation of the main street, the main approach to Dun Laoghaire is now via the coast road, so many people's first view of the town centre is the harbour, the town hall and this wonderful archway - a marvellous introduction. The monument also seems to transform and intrigue more and more as you approach it; it is truly captivating.

If it is to be moved at all from its present site, the only alternative is to relocate it 30 metres down the walkway, past the shops and restaurants but still in line with the coast road. - Yours, etc.,
