Madam, - Rosita Boland's timely article on Michael Warren's sculpture, "The Gateway", draws attention to the unanimous vote of the Dún Laoghaire - Rathdown Area Committee to have it relocated, following phone calls and e-mails from the public. This "X Factor" methodology is hardly appropriate in the context of this item of public sculpture.

As the sculptor points out, "The Gateway" was designed specifically for the context of the place in which it now stands. It now stands in a fine public open space overlooking the sea front. The strong "brutal" structure of rusting metal recalls the industrial archaeology associated with shipping. Its design and scale relates well to its architectural context which includes the Town Hall, the former railway station and the embracing granite piers of the historic harbour.

The sculpture expresses the welcoming entrance to a haven providing shelter from the elements. It is a fitting symbol for the town and its function as a seaport entry to the country.

As designed and constructed this monument will survive weathering and vandalism. It is to be hoped that it will be spared the attention of the local authority long enough to allow the public to come to terms with it. The photograph which accompanied the article showed that the younger generation, in the form of skateboarders, already treat it with familiarity. - Yours, etc.,
