Dwindling congregations

Sir, – The report prepared for the Dublin Council of Priests makes for a dismal but not an unexpected prognosis for Catholics in the capital ("Mass attendance in Dublin to drop by a third by 2030", January 21st).

Such a projected decrease in Mass attendance may be unduly optimistic. The grey-haired congregation predominates, with the absence of young people a significant phenomenon.

The focus for the Dublin Council of Priests should be on the reasons why young people of goodwill find little meaning in Catholicism.

The challenge for all of us is not how to bolster a crumbling church but on the creation of a new and challenging Catholicism. – Yours, etc,
