Sir, - What a great and proud day for Ireland was the occasion of the beatification of Edmund Rice in Rome. Similarly, a couple of years ago a sizeable number of Irish martyrs were honoured by the Vatican for their total sacrifice in defence of Ireland's Christian heritage.
Is it not, then, sadly significant that while over 90 per cent of citizens in the State would claim to be Roman Catholic, our President, Mrs Mary Robinson, chose not to represent them at these two historic occasions during her tenure of office? - Yours, etc.
