Sir, – Kathleen Breathnach (December 27th) is critical of An Post for a delay in delivering a parcel to Inis Meáin, claiming that the problem was caused by the use of an Irish placename as opposed to the Anglicised alternative.
Has she considered using the Eircode system, a unique identifier, designed and rolled out in July at great cost to increase the efficiency of our postal system?
The 2 per cent of postal customers now using the system can't be wrong (Jennifer Duggan, "Six months on, people still confounded by Eircode system" (December 24th). – Yours, etc,
RONAN McDERMOTT,
Dublin 6.
Sir, – Eircode works fine on my smartphone. Not only can I get the Eircode for my apartment building but there is a separate code for each apartment.
I welcome the assurance that Eircode will be integrated with GPS satellite navigation services shortly.
I well remember how long it took for people to use zip codes in the US and postcodes in the UK, despite constant reminders for them to do so.
I must be one of the 2 per cent of people who think Eircode is great. – Yours, etc,
PW HETHERINGTON,
Dún Laoghaire,
Co Dublin.
