Sir, - Despite being in strong agreement with the vast bulk of the Amsterdam Treaty, I found myself obliged to vote No on a European issue for the first time, because of the potential for reversed discrimination and absurd appointments, which could be a consequence of Chapter Three. This treaty should not have been put to a single omnibus proposition, as the issues involved are too disparate.

Neutrality is the hiding place of the irresponsible. If we are members of the EU, we should be prepared to defend our territory and interests, including the European Convention on Human Rights. I believe strongly that the EU should have an armed force, which should be used immediately to prevent the Serbs repeating in Kosovo what they have recently done in Bosnia. President Milosevic should be arrested and called to account for his behaviour. Meanwhile, economic sanctions are likely to prove too little too late for the people of Kosovo. - Yours, etc., Bill Tormey,

Glasnevin, Dublin 11.
