Madam, - Doesn't it tell a lot when the magnificent effort by Drogheda United is crammed into a small column in your edition of August 7th, dwarfed by yet another instalment of the "Will I stay or will I go?" affair featuring that spoilt brat Cristiano Ronaldo.

But you are not alone in your attitude to Irish soccer. Why on earth do Charlie Chawke and associates invest so many millions in far-flung Sunderland and bankroll that great Cork man who walked out on his country not so long ago?

Why does Boyle Sports, which began its gambling empire in Drogheda, invest so much in Sunderland and invest nothing in the Drogs? Yet its seven Drogheda bookie offices have no difficulty in separating the gambling public from their money.

I'm sure Fintan O'Toole could find psychological fault lines here. I would put it all down to a crass inferiority complex.
