Families of fire victims meet Pope

Sir, – Paddy Agnew ("Relatives of Carrickmines fire victims meet Pope", October 26th) describes the meeting of Pope Francis with nomadic communities at the Vatican.

While Pope Francis called for respect for nomadic peoples, he also emphasised the importance for them to “do something to make their living conditions better, becoming involved in creating more human peripheries and combating the poor levels of educational achievement”.

These words could be a potential rallying call for all those who want to work to improve the lives of Travellers and overcome the lack of trust and respect between Travellers and the settled community in Ireland. But as Pope Francis states, it will require action from both parties to make this happen. – Yours, etc,
