Madam, - As a language teacher from the North who has no Irish, I have listened with interest over 26 years to the debate over the compulsory learning of the language.
Would a carrot not be better than a stick? And should adults demand children comply with requirements which they for the most part cannot meet themselves? I have always thought that those adults who could show a working knowledge of Irish should be rewarded by having to pay less tax or receiving higher social security benefits. With an incentive like that I, like any Co Antrim woman, would be first in line to apply. - Yours, etc,
HEATHER MOORE, Old Rathmichael, Shankill, Dublin 18.
