Sir, – A couple of weeks ago the British government announced it was considering a tax on sugary foods and drinks because of the epidemic of obesity and sugar-related sicknesses.
The powerful industries involved must have been worried as the story was making big headlines.
Last weekend the World Health Organisation issued a report connecting cancer risks with various higher rates of meat consumption.
Your article by Dr Robert O'Connor of the Irish Cancer Society ("WHO is not saying don't eat meat", October 28th) pointed out that the meat research has been out for some time. Still this story is getting bigger headlines and has swept aside the sugar tax debate.
Surely the WHO could have delayed the report which has distracted the media attention from the dangers of over-consumption of sugar and obesity.
