Sir, – The biggest winner of the 2016 commemorations will undoubtedly be the Irish flag. I see the flag flying in parts of Dublin in which it has rarely or never flown before.

The commemorations have removed an uncomfortable symbolism from the national flag and returned it to the mainstream population.

Sir, – During Sunday’s parade, I stood at the Bank of Ireland on College Green, and the big screen kept the people informed of all that was happening.

It was strange to see the Bank of Ireland flag, a symbol of our economic downfall, flying from the building. I hope we have learned from the past. – Yours, etc,
