From bathing area to eyesore?

Sir, – The Guillamene is almost a nationwide attraction, and people visit to swim in its deep, clear, refreshing water. Young people especially make great use of the diving area. We love to run, jump and splash into the water, an activity that has been enjoyed for generations.

The majority of boys in the school feel annoyed and unhappy about the installation of the railings there (Denis McClean, March 14th). We have tried to have our voices heard by the council, but we feel they will not listen. We invited the Mayor and other adults involved in our campaign to speak with the class group. The meeting went well because we learned that some adults are on our side.

Since then, we have organised letters of petition that will be signed by approximately 700 students from both the boys’ and girls’ schools in Tramore. Some of our classmates spoke on the local radio and others attended the Town Council meeting, where the issue was debated.

A lot of students say that if the railings are not taken down, they will have no option but to begin jumping from the nearby cliffs, which is extremely dangerous – and that is something we don’t want.  –   Yours, etc,
