Garda statistics

Sir, – The figures for alcohol breath tests carried out between 2012 and 2016 were inflated by a million, with Garda management still unable to explain why or how. Some 89 homicides between 2003 and 2017 were not counted. In instances of multiple fatalities, only one of the fatalities was recorded. Some 11 of the 15 phones requested by the Charleton tribunal are missing. The CSO has suspended publication of Garda crime statistics because of concerns over their accuracy. But despite all this, Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan tells us that trust levels in the Garda has reached an all-time high of 91 per cent. Perhaps the public should also suspend belief on Garda trust level figures until the Garda Síochána can demonstrate to the public that it can count accurately and correctly. – Yours, etc,
