Madam, - The Very Rev Philip Knowles (November 18th) believes there are only two Georgian cathedrals in Ireland - the Church of Ireland cathedrals in Cashel and Waterford. Dean Knowles's list is too short by far. If by "Georgian" is meant the period between 1714 and 1830, the list of Georgian cathedrals, both classical and Gothic and both Anglican and Catholic, runs to more than a dozen.
Such a list (drawn from Dr Peter Galloway's Comprehensive book The Cathedrals of Ireland, 1992) would include the Catholic cathedrals in Carlow, Cork, Newry, Skibbereen and Waterford and the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin as well as the Church of Ireland cathedrals in Achonry, Cashel, Clogher, Downpatrick, Lismore (partly 18th and early 19th century), Sligo, Trim (partly re-built in 1802-1803), and Waterford. - Yours, etc.,
COLIN ARMSTRONG, Village Court, Belfast 8
