Getting used to Eircode

Sir, – As a rural dweller, I have experienced great frustration with couriers that refuse to use Eircode. I have no contract with these companies but online retailers do, and I have no choice but to take my chances and hope that I am available to give directions.

These companies should grow up. Their complaints and utopian dreams do not stand up to scrutiny.

If the Government is to blame for anything it is a lack of spine in promoting Eircode. That so many parts of the Civil Service and public service do not facilitate Eircode is a poor reflection on their commitment to efficient delivery of service. I note that Revenue, the most professional arm of the State, is leading the way as usual.

Surely mandating that an Eircode be present on every grant, welfare or tax refund application would soften the cough of the holdouts. It would be a simple step to require the code on every property tax return and property price register entry. – Yours, etc,
