Madam, - On the question of whether or not God should be in the European Union constitution, I notice that the preamble begins with a quotation from Thucydides.

What would be more appropriate than to end with another quotation, from another ancient and eminent source, also originally written in Greek: "Love your neighbour as yourself"?

The use of the quotation would no more require a belief in Christianity than would Thucydides's words be predicated on belief in Zeus.

This would surely sum up the ideals of the European project: tolerance, respect and caring between people within each state, among the various states in the Union and between the Union and the outside world. - Yours, etc.,
