Hillwalkers and farmers

Sir, – Unfortunately, there has not been enough consideration of landowners' concerns in this debate. If David Herman (October 21st) is genuinely interested in creating the type of amenity that he refers to, he could begin by recognising the value of discussion among all groups, and especially farmers who will be impacted permanently.

We have many examples in this country of how working with farmers has created valuable amenities, such as the thousands of kilometres of walkways that already exist.

Farmers are willing to participate by agreement in walkways, but those developing them must first address the serious implications walkways impose on the farm business. – Yours, etc,

PAT DUNNE,
