Madam, - Kitty Holland's article ("Home is where the hurt is" Nov 4th), which used facts from the Women's Aid National Freephone Helpline Statistics 2005, outlined in graphic detail the reality of life for families living with domestic abuse and violence.

The Government's response to violence against women has been derisory. The latest research shows that 15 per cent of Irish women experience severe domestic abuse and up to 40 per cent of women seeking refuge were refused accommodation due to lack of space. Yet funding for essential services for women and children has decreased in real terms over the last five years.

We will never fully challenge abuse in the home until we break the code of silence - the omertà - that surrounds domestic violence. Victims continue to be blamed for staying with an abusive partner. How often have you heard someone say, "if it was me I'd leave" or "she must be exaggerating"? As long as this culture of blame remains, the problem will continue to be one the Government can ignore.

To change attitudes it is essential that a nationwide education and awareness campaign be established. - Yours, etc,
