Madam, - Karl Deering (January 25th) makes some interesting points about the dangers glorifying the violent aspects of the birth of this State. He emphasises the far more significant role played by those who contributed to our independence by peaceful means, a contribution that is virtually ignored.
I am concerned that history is beginning to repeat itself. When - and I hope that my choice of that conjunction is correct - we have achieved political stability in Northern Ireland, it will be the men of violence who will claim responsibility for the peace and the braver efforts of John Hume, David Trimble and others will be forgotten. - Yours, etc,
DANIEL PLEWMAN, Stonybatter, Dublin 7.
