Sir, - Alex Maskey, Lord Mayor of Belfast, deserves much credit and admiration for laying that wreath on the Belfast Cenotaph. His gesture brings honour to him and to those of his party who supported him and must surely give hope to all in this country who look forward to the day when unionist, nationalist, British and Irish can share the minute's silence without rancour.

May we hope for a real peace in our time?

Interestingly, I found two Maskeys on my last visit to those sad cemeteries in Flanders. Nearby were other graves of other young men of "Northern" and "Southern" regiments. They were united in life and in death and maybe we shall see their descendants, through gestures like Mr Maskey's, one day united in life and peace. - Yours, etc.,
