Dear Sir, - At the height of a strong north-east gale last Wednesday (July 18th), Portrane beach in Co Dublin was literally covered with jellyfish.
As far as the eye could see, thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of these transparent marine invertebrates were stacked up along the high water mark. Most were disc size but some were definitely "man 'o wars".
As a regular seafarer, I have noticed a phenomenal increase in the amount of jellyfish at sea this year, particularly in the Dublin Bay area.
Is it all down to water temperatures or is there a scientific reason? - Yours, etc.,
