Sir, - I have recently been to Ireland, that lovely land of many greens and all sorts of litter colours. Here are two main problems which I noticed on my visit.

The train from Dublin to Cork had no ash-trays in the carriages for the smokers and on the way back it was the same. A lot of Irish people complained about this, and in the end everybody put their cigarette butts out on the floor (the windows did not open) or in a coffee cup.

At the supermarket I bought some groceries which came to £21. I was astonished to find that they gave me 34 plastic bags in all. Do any Irish people bring their own shopping bags to the supermarket?

These seem to me to be simple problems, but if we (I'm a Paddy) cannot solve the simple ones, how can we take on the big ones? - Yours, etc., Steve Kinlough,
