Sir, - So Sile de Valera, Mary Harney and Bertie Ahern are anxious to initiate a debate, lest the EU erode our unique and highly prized national identity and traditions.

And Rory O'Hanlon assures us the Government has fulfilled 75 per cent of its election manifesto promises, and that it only remains to implement the other 25 per cent before we thank them for the fact we never had it so good.

So just who was it railroaded us into the waiting room for NATO (a.k.a. PfP) against a longstanding tradition of military neutrality that many of us considered central to our Irish political identity - without either democratic debate or promised referendum?

Or does that promise qualify under the 25 per cent pending?
