Sir, - Last Saturday at Lansdown Road we witnessed the ludicrous spectacle of medals and the trophy being presented to members of the losing team.
This arose, I understand, because the sponsors decided that, in the event of two teams having the same number of points at the top of the table, the championship winner would be deemed to be the one that had scored the most/conceded the fewest points in the competition.
A much fairer system, and one more appropriate to rugby football, would be if the team that won the match between the two leaders were deemed champions.
Thus Ireland, not England, would now be champions. - Yours, etc.,
