Learning in your sleep

Sir, – I see that the problem of sleeping in church and its solution still exercise your letter-writers.

HM Coast Guard in earlier times had problems in ensuring that those on watch duties did not sleep.

One solution adopted was to have the watcher seated on a “one-legged donkey” – a stool with a single leg. This ensured that any periods of “nodding off” were brief, painful and salutary.

This system, if adopted in churches, should result in much less sleeping there, as well as ensuring instant and appropriate punishment for those who did drop off to sleep.

Hoping that this suggestion may help to put this church-sleeping subject to bed. – Yours, etc,
