Sir, - I read with interest the letter from Mr Liam Ronayne, President of the Library Association of Ireland (November 1st, 1997). His figure of over 30 libraries throughout the State suggest an average of one library per 11,000 people.

The people of Lucan have been looking for a library for the past 30 years. The population of Lucan is now over 21,000 (census 1996) and growing rapidly. Over 3,000 houses have been built since 1991 and still there is no sign of a library.

We have a free site, we have approved plans. All that is required is the Minister's approval to allow the library to proceed.

An entire generation of children have grown up in Lucan without access to a library. The question is: how many more generations will have to do the same? - Yours, etc.,
