Sir, - Your correspondent Mr Gerard Bennett (June 10th) worries about election results set to music in RTE. For hard of hearing viewers this is, indeed, an everyday occurrence as even main news bulletins, whether in English or Irish, are now accompanied by theme music. Do I joke? Your readers can check for themselves.

And who wants incidental music? Everyone, according to RTE top brass. It is part of television's attractiveness, we are told, just like having a lisp, also one of nature's attractive traits. But try lip reading politicians and others with a lisp who regularly appear on our screens.

Seriously though, hard of hearing viewers do not want theme music, and certainly do not want those with a lisp. Is RTE listening?
