Sir, – John Lynch ("Lough Derg the leveller, a pilgrim place with its own vocabulary, culture, ethos", Rite & Reason, July 28th) evoked a few choice memories – the midges that were immune to any jungle cream; Lough Derg Soup, which comprised a cup of boiling water flavoured to one's own taste by the addition of salt and pepper; thick black tea; and the wafting aroma of well-done dry toast.
I have been on the Camino de Santiago on a number of occasions in both Spain and France and I can testify that a mere three days in Lough Derg must be, without doubt, the pilgrimage of all pilgrimages. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I enjoyed the Lough Derg article. Maybe one day. In the meantime, it’s Tenerife for me! – Yours, etc,
