Madam, - Munster's fantastic support in Cardiff shows the folly of building a stadium with a 52,000 capacity at Lansdowne Road.
The IRFU should sell the land for housing and build a stadium capable of holding more than 80,000 people beside the Dublin-Limerick railway line close to Limerick and then offer it to the GAA and FAI for their use in exchange for the long-term use of Croke Park for rugby matches.
Rugby internationals used to be held at Ravenhill in Belfast, as well as at Lansdowne Road. They do not all need to be in Dublin. Many rugby supporters would have a better chance of attending games in Limerick. And the Government could claim credit for an act of decentralisation that would actually work. - Yours, etc,
ERIC H LOWRY, Great Haseley, Oxfordshire, England.
Madam, - As we celebrate Munster's thrilling victory in the Heineken Cup, we might spare a grateful thought for the man who made it all possible and the bicentenary of whose birth occurs this year.
William Webb Ellis - the man who stopped the ball rolling. - Yours, etc,
JOHN BURTON, Derrycreigh, Glengarriff, Co Cork.
