Madam, - In her letter of March 11th Mrs Mary Stewart wrote that "in Ireland a large number of women consider rearing their families to be more important than having ultra-successful careers. . ."

My dictionary defines the word "career" as "an occupation undertaken for a substantial period of a person's life".

Therefore, assuming that children are our most precious asset, may we construe that the rearing of the next generation is an important and potentially an ultra-successful career? - Yours, etc,
