Making Irish Visible

Sir, - George Huxley (December 2nd) bemoans the invisibility of Irish. Well, is it any wonder? When did you last see an Irish-language title in a bookshop window? Over a hundred titles are published each year and yet TG4 doesn't have a books programme. Even if it did, much more is required to open the doors of reception and keep them open.

For a start, a comprehensive TV series on the history of the Irish language - and its literature - is long overdue and would have made a worthy millennium project. Subtitled, it could be sold to other channels; in video form it could find a niche in schools, universities, language classes at home and abroad and could also be marketed in the realms of cultural tourism. - Is mise,
