Making Merrion Square a lot less leafy

Sir, – Can Dublin City Council please halt its hacking down of trees and vegetation in the once beautiful Merrion Square? What was a tree-surrounded sanctuary has been destroyed; bird song has been replaced by the sound of trucks and buses. The leafy vista of trees is replaced by an unsightly stream of commuter traffic.

The council states it has a policy on encouraging biodiversity, but obviously this does not extend to Merrion Square, where the insect and nesting habitat has been destroyed. What is even more dispiriting is that we are paying for it! – Yours, etc,

JOHN DEVLIN,

Dublin 2.
