Madam, - Thank you for Bryan Coll's sensible article about Ulster-Scots (May 8th). It is a topic that gets many people het up, but, by avoiding the extremes of enthusiasm and derision, he has given us some insight into a worthwhile cultural effort, however modest in scope. Only ingrained prejudice would dismiss it as "DIY for Orangemen".
I agree with those who reject coinages such as langblether for telephone, if only because blether properly means not just talk but voluble, garrulous and above all silly talk. The telephone deserves better, despite the loquacity that the mobile phone inflicts on us.
One of the murals illustrating the article proclaims the message "4,000 years of Ulster-Scots". That is the langest blether I ever came across, ruling out even the possibility that our compatriots are a lost tribe of Israel! - Yours, etc,
