Sir, – Dr Michael J McCarthy (December 14th) recognises the need for the Department of Education to "attract and retain the top mathematics graduates and postgraduates into post-primary education", if we are to produce students who can cope with mathematics at third-level.
The Department of Education currently does not reward new teachers who have invested their time in obtaining relevant masters or doctoral qualifications.
The message is clear – this is the best small country in which to be ordinary. – Yours, etc,
