Madam, – Recent political and media comment has referred to the “markets” as being sceptical of what the Minister for Finance is trying to do, in relation to the banks.

As a qualified accountant and business graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, who has worked in a senior capacity for two prominent publicly quoted companies for a total of 20 years, I can say that the stock market never fairly values a business, but rather provides a market for the sale in businesses.

The Minister will be wise not to be guided by the results of trading among stock market participants, many of whom would be equally at home at a roulette wheel in Monte Carlo. – Yours, etc,
