Madam, - You reported (June 19th) that next-day delivery of standard mail by An Post is improving. Nearly 80 per cent of letters arrive at their destinations within one working day, and 98 per cent are delivered within three working days. Last week I received a cheque from the UK by post. The sender put it in a postbox near his home. It was then collected by a man in a van who brought to a sorting office.
When sorted it was then put on a plane or a boat and sent to be sorted in Ireland. Here it was given to a postman who pushed it through my letter-box - two days after it was posted in the UK.
I then took the cheque to my bank where a teller zapped it into a computer - to ensure the sender had funds, I assume - and then informed me it would take at least five working days for the funds to be cleared into my account.
Am I missing something? - Yours, etc,
GERARD CONNOLLY,
Percy Place,
Dublin 4.
