Sir, - You began a major article on this subject in your issue of November 7th with the words: "If the Jervis Shopping Centre proves anything it shows how far we've come in a relatively short period . . ." As I walked around that same centre that same day I could not help reflecting on how far we've come in my lifetime.

I am old enough to remember the effects of the Economic War with Britain in my home, County Wexford, in the mid 1930s. In those days the words "Sinn Fein" meant something quite different to today - support for our home industry.

As I walked and saw Debbenhams and Boots and Argosy and Next and Burtons and all the other English shops, I felt I was in just one more UK provincial shopping centre, and I could not help wondering if it was all worthwhile. By coincidence, the film Michael Collins was released the same day. Well - was it all worthwhile? - Yours, etc.,
