Sir, – I compliment Patsy McGarry on his article "Nicky Kelly still seeks answers for Sallins train robbery arrest" (April 5th), regarding one of the State's gravest miscarriages of justice.
The question remains why, after 40 years, have successive governments consistently reneged on commitments to hold an independent public inquiry.
These same governments, which were not shy in highlighting abuses of human rights and civil liberties in other countries, allowed this scandal to persist.
If the incoming government and particularly the newly elected TDs are to have any credibility on human rights and civil liberty issues, they must act now to address this in the public interest. – Yours, etc,
