Sir, - As an Ulster Protestant born and bred, I thought I knew something about the mind-set of my people. But it seems that Ruth Dudley Edwards (Opinion, June 29th) knows more. Thanks to her "four years of research", I now realise that I am as "horrifyingly ignorant" about my own community as are "the British and Irish governments and peoples".

I fear that even the purchase and ingestion of Ms Dudley Edwards's book may not be enough to straighten me out. Will I need a lifetime's therapy? - Yours, etc.,
