Nul points for Eurovision?

Sir, – Sitting watching some of the Eurovision semi-finals, I began to wonder are some of those who were voted to represent their respective countries the best they have or did those countries just not care? Some of the songs, outlandish and ridiculous garish costumes and pyrotechnics that made me reach for a headache tablet made me realise why I stopped watching this supposed singing competition.

What happened to the real talent and creativity that kept us glued to our seats? A guy in a see-through costume riding a bucking bronco, a singer sitting on a chair washing her hands constantly, looking as if she couldn’t care less, while another singer was wearing a face mask and crown, looking as if he just came from the Met Ball, and a bunch of rockers looking like characters out of Guardians of the Galaxy. Ireland didn’t do itself any favours, many years ago, when we decided to send a turkey to represent our nation.

Of what I saw of the two semi finals there were a few, and I mean a few, decent individual songs and lyrics, which included Ireland’s, but overall it was extremely disappointing. The organisers need to get back to basics or else I, like many others, will just turn the TV off or switch channels. I fervently hope that this competition will focus on real talent and not the outlandish buffoonery and limited vocals and lyrics that we have had to endure over the past decade or so. Oh, for the ABBA days once more. – Yours, etc,

CHRISTY GALLIGAN,
